2009 UNESCO World Summit Awards - Winner, eContent and Creativity (eLearning and Science)

A virtual and physical space, where user-generated content floats alongside treasures from our national museum.

Gibson International’s concept, physical design, and interactive technology powered this all-encompassing museum exhibition design that explored New Zealand’s identity. OurSpace was a radical museum exhibition that didn’t just tell – it invited you to participate.

Two immersive experiences and thrilling simulator rides encouraged visitors to physically engage with their heritage. They could walk across and touch a giant map of New Zealand, or play at ‘the Wall’ by adding personal photos and videos.

The Gibson team produced all facets of the exhibition at the Museum of New Zealand – Te Papa Tongarewa. Our software animated the interactivity of galleries and interactive display installations. We also created two high-impact, motion-platform films best described by watching the experiences – the Deep Ride and the High Ride.

Interactive displays and multimedia design inspire exploration of NZ identity

Visitors created their vision of New Zealand at OurSpace using our state-of-the-art technology to generate content. Hand-held infrared wands could mash up photos, video and messages on ‘the Wall’, while ‘the Map’ provided light-up interactivity at your feet. Both were connected to a dynamic media database housing collections from the museum, national institutes and online contributions from the public.

This high-tech museum exhibition was chosen by Te Papa founding sponsor TelstraClear to be their flagship brand carrier in the museum. Such was their enthusiasm for the social and technological innovations unleashed, Telstra commissioned various spin-off interfaces, and made the museum exhibition a base for entertaining clients.
