Immersive Storytelling
Contained within a recently built visitor centre, this ticketed exhibition provides the opportunity to learn about the cultural and natural heritage surrounding Punakaiki, which is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s newest National Parks.
Utilising innovative technology and immersive storytelling, visitors journey through a series of multi-sensory galleries that convey the unique geology, diverse ecosystems, and legends of the region.

Rumbling Rocks
The immersive theatre introduces the region and its geological history. Booming voices explain the formation of the region’s iconic Pancake Rocks. Buttkickers – low-frequency tactile audio transducers – vibrate the seats in time with the region’s geological creation, theatrically telling the story of the whenua’s formation.
Sensory Stories
As visitors enter the Alpine and Rainforest galleries, they are surrounded by birdsong melody and the sights of mountaintop views, forest floors, and the plants and animals that live there.
The map projected onto the central table gives visitors the chance to see the region firsthand and engage with the stories of trampers and gold miners who travelled through Punakaiki.
